We all arrived at the airport pretty much at the same
time so even though the plan was to meet
at the gate, we met at security. No
problems and plenty of time to spare.
We were pleasantly surprised that we actually got a sandwich in
flight! Again, even though we bought our
plane tickets at different times, we ended up all sitting together!
A joyful reunion with Juan at the airport. A quick check in at the hotel and we’re off
for adventures. Our hotel is in the
heart of the historic district, right behind the cathedral.
We’re immersed in the busy street life with hurdy-gurdy
players, vendors, beggers, busy businessmen, nuns……
The Governor’s palace is closed so we can’t see the Diego
Rivera murals but are told that it will be open Sunday morning so we will plan
to see them then.
We visit the ruins of Tenochtitlan which are right next to
the cathedral. In fact there is
excavations of the ruins going on under the cathedral.
A stop at my favorite
restaurant overlooking the zoocolo. It
is the Flavor of Yucatan week so they have some of my favorite Yucatecan
foods. When the waiter realizes that we
have a native Yucatecan with us, he warns us that this is a Mexico City
version. The panuchos were a little
different but delicious and sopa de lima was divine and right on.
Several hundred teachers were marching around the
zoocolo protesting some new
reforms. One of which was that they were
to spend their Saturdays in continuing education. Continuing education is certainly admirable
but every Saturday?
Tomorrow night, there will be a big concert in the
zoocolo. The restaurant terazza would
be an awesome place to hear the
concert. Maybe we’ll give it a try.
There is a wonderful balcony on the roof of the hotel
overlooking the cathedral. We planned to
have a drink up there but it was raining so we ended the day with a drink in
the hotel restaurant.
Hurray for another trip blog. Say hi to Juan for me.
