Oct 31 Puebla to Oaxaca
Today we drive to Oaxaca. Before we leave we need some breakfast. We stop at a church that has someone selling tamales. The ones in front of a church are always the
best ones. Juan gets several. They are warm and delicious. Oh, now the buffet breakfast seems a little
much but we stop anyway. That’s the way
to get some coffee. Luckily, we were
also able to order off the menu. Many of
us only want fruit and coffee or tea. Oh
my goodness! They bring a platter of
fruit for each one of us! We eat as much
as we want and take a box to go. They
will be good along the road.
On the way out of town, we drive
up on a hill with a park overlooking the city.
This is also where the mayor lives.
A little to cloudy to see the volcanoes.
We settle in for our 5-6 hour
drive to Oaxaca. I don’t think anyone
was expecting the beautiful scenery along the way. We cross a 9,000 foot pass. Wow!
There are so many layers of mountains.
There is one area that has many large candelabra cacti. Serafin stops and we cautiously cross the
road to take pictures. They are
impressive!
The photo stops really helps to
break up the trip and stretch our legs.
Then there is the stop to look at
the wooden trucks that are being sold.
About 5 families in a row are selling them and that’s it. Several of us do buy something to take home
to a little one. (Me included)
We get settled into our hotel, Xitilu. It is a remodeled old house and very nice and
comfortable. A central courtyard with
rooms off of it. The treat for the night
is a 7 course tasting menu inspired by Dia de los Muertos. I love tasting menus where one has just a
little bit of everything and savors each bite with the depth of flavors. We started with a drop of something that was to wake up our digestive senses. We
also had pairings with mezcal, juices, wine, beer…
Good nght.
What magnificent photos!! (No surprise, there, of course!)
