Since we were out late, we decided to explore close to the cabin today. Wow! We discovered some wonderful places within a half hour drive.
In the morning, Betsy and I decided to walk through Duck Creek to the visitor's center. Luckily, Nick said he would drive and meet us there. It turned out to be a hillier walk than we had expected and the visitor center was further away than we thought. We were quite glad to see Nick and drive the rest of the way to the visitor's center. They had some nice maps and 16 things to do within 16 miles. We decided to pass on the ice cave that always has ice on the pathway. We had heard good things about Cascade Falls and Navajo Lake so decided to explore those.
After a nice lunch, we set out for the Falls. The trail head started a few miles down a dirt road. We were rewarded with beautiful vistas. The trail was a bit challenging but the falls were worth it!.
The water at Cascade Falls is from an underground spring that is fed by Navajo Lake. It makes its way through the rock and come gushing out to form Cascade Falls several miles from the lake.
Many people like to fish at Navajo Lake. We just enjoyed the views.
The The light green of the Aspen leaves and the white bark made a nice contrast to the red rocks.
When we returned to the cabin, we enjoyed some beers while Nick made a good chicken dish with fresh vegetables and rice. We forgot about how the rice would take a lot longer to cook at the high altitudes. Luckily, the other things could simmer while the rice cooked for about twice the time that we're used to. All was delicious.
