It's going to be a day of driving and seeing awesome vistas. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive to the Northern rim. In true hobbit form, we have a light breakfast in anticipation of a second breakfast when we get to Kanab where we have a nice big breakfast. Then on to the park. Excitement along the way. A controlled burn was in process right next to the road.
As soon as we entered the park, a herd of buffalo decided to leisurely cross the road in front of us.
At the North rim, it is mostly driving from one look out point to the next and doing a little hiking along the rim at each one. We started with the visitor's center. It was a short walk out to Bright Angel Point which would have been harrowing if it hadn't been for hand rails in a few key places. Photo ops galore!
We relax at the lodge , enjoying a beer while we wait for the ranger talk at 3:00. It's now 3:05 and doesn't look like people are even gathering for the talk. Oh dear! We changed time zones when we went into Arizona and the talk isn't for another 55 minutes. We decide we aren't going to wait around for that long to hear about condor relocation. We can look it up on line.
Our next stop is Point Imperial which is the highest point at 8803 feet. There is a nice picnic spot but we opt to go to Cape Royal and Angel's Window to picnic.
At Cape Royal we find a table with great overlook views. The ravens seem to like it too.
There is an area with log benches that is designed for weddings. It's the day before Nick and my wedding anniversary so we definitely had to take a picture of us there.
It's a close, easy walk to Angel's window overlook.
Time to head back to our cabin. On the way back we stop again in Kanab for gas. This is as close as we get to Arches National Park.
