Orkney Islands back to Inverness

 June 10

After another wonderful breakfast, we check out of our B&B.  We have until 3:30 before we need to get in line for the ferry back.  We go to the center of Kirkwell where the old church is and little shops.  OMG, a cruise ship is spitting out tourists!  Yuck!  What are they doing here? We do want to see the church and Melodie has a Scottish liqueur that she has been looking for and has been told that a store down in the tourist shopping area probably has it.  Oh my, we have to deal with them.  We find a good parking spot right across the street from the church.  We decide it's best to split up as we have different interests and speeds.  The church is surrounded by grave stones.  It was once a catholic church but is now a protestant "Free" church.

As we walk from the church through the tourist section, we come across the store owned by the wife of the host of our B&B.  Three Sisters.  We stop in to say "Hi".  Melodie finds her store, Brig Lauder.  It must not be totally tourist because it has fresh meats and seafood that tourists aren't going to buy.  We also find a local craft fair.  There are about 8 local craft people that are only open when a cruise ship is docked.  There is a knitter, a wood worker, jelly maker, jewelry maker plus a few more that I can't remember.

We meet back up with Connie and Marilyn and escape the tourists.   We head back to where we had lunch yesterday.  Today we chose soup and prawns.  Another wonderful meal!  Today we have desserts too. We share 4 different desserts.  All are wonderful but everyone saved the chocolate torte topped with coconut toffee as their last bite.

We've seen so much laundry hanging out to dry.
Didn't expect that so soon after I took the picture, there would be the mad dash to get it into the house!

We have a bit more time before we need to line up for the ferry.  We decided to go back to the tip of the island where there was walkway to the light house that was under water because of the tides  We were hoping that the tides would be different and we could walk to the light house.  When we got there we could see a few people on the light house side.  But, as we looked closer, the path was already covered in water and the few people were preparing to wade across.  Oh, no thank you!  Melodie and I walked a bit along the coast and enjoyed the fresh air and exercise.

We loaded on to the ferry.  It is a relatively small ferry with maybe 55 cars and 10 or so trucks.  We had tickets that had vouchers for dinner as well.  Since we'd paid for the food, of course, we had to get it.  Sure didn't compare to the wonderful lunch we had.  Marilyn and Connie had the fish and chips which was sorta ok.  Since I'm allergic to fish, I had to resort to the hamburger.  Dry and tasteless.

Once off the ferry, we headed towards Inverness - about a 3 hour drive.  Scheduled to get in about 9:30.  All was well.  We found the apartment on the river but didn't have the code to get in.  Well, that's because the owner hadn't confirmed and sent the info even though we were confirmed with Booking.com.  We finally did get in touch with him and he was ever so sorry but he didn't have any rooms for us.  It's raining and now 10:00 at night.  At least it's still light.  Melodie and I set off on foot to look for the hotel that was "Just across the river and down a few undred years" according to the owner of the apartments that didn't have any rooms.  Well.  It wasn't there.  Long, cold story later.  Melodie and I did find a Radison Independent that had 2 rooms left.   We took them and then went back to fetch Marilyn and Connie.  Just happy to have a place to lay our heads.  Actually, it's quite nice and very comfortable.  The man at the desk was so nice and generous.  Marilyn pulled into a driveway so we could unload our suitcases but it was very illegally parked.  She stayed with the car while we took things in.  When I got back with the map of where to park, there was a policeman there.   Marilyn was in tears.  He was very kind and helpful.

We decide that we aren't setting an alarm for the morning and will all sleep in.
